In A Score and Thirteen the composer explores the diverse range and timbres of both piano and clarinet, while at the same time expressing a number symbolism contained in Antoni Gaudí’s series of twenty-eight so-called magic squares in the basement of La Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona. In each grid highlighted numbers come to a total of 33, the age of Christ, hence the title.
