A Little Light Meitheal (2019)

for Trad Orchestra, by Anne-Marie O’Farrell

This suite for traditional orchestra was compiled for the Meitheal Summer School of 2019,
and comprises five tunes: Máirseáil Luimní was composed during the composer’s residency
in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, while Port na gCailligh was written in honour of the
wise woman or cailleach of Killnaboy in Co. Clare, Mariah Curtis. Air for Margaret is a fond
remembrance of Margaret Gaffney, known by many for her friendship in music and her support
of young musicians. Waltz and Polka complete the work on a lighthearted note, providing
young players with new traditional tunes for their sessions as well as for ensemble playing.

Bowing and tongueing directions are omitted from the score in keeping with traditional style
performance practice. Ornaments may be added to those given, provided the entire section is
playing in precise unison. The work is designed for use with players who learn by ear.
